SUNSHINE COAST

Selene PennettaSelenePennetta

On Sunday afternoon Tempo Allegro School of Music joined over 500 audience members as the Queensland Pops Orchestra and guest artists presented ‘Viva Italia Supremo!’ at The Events Centre, Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast.

With a wonderfully diverse program that included classical Verdi to Italian Pop, we thoroughly enjoyed what was a joyful celebration of Italian culture. Opened by honorary guest, the Italian Consul Dott. Ludovico Camussi, the Orchestra was joined by a number of guest artists accompanied by the faultless harmonies of vocal group More than Words.

Also performing were charismatic
tenor trio Tenori (David Kidd, Craig Atkinson and Andrew Pryor) who gave everything from Puccini’s Nessun Dorma to Mambo Italiano! the ‘Tenori treatment’ with sumptuous harmonies and a luscious operatic sound. The boys first met singing on tour with the Ten Tenors, and now combine their sixty years international performing experience into a show that is both vibrant and wonderfully entertaining.

Vocal powerhouse
Anna-Maria La Spina showcased her abilities as a singer songwriter as along with the orchestra she performed Italian classics and a selection of original music. Her distinctive voice has seen her complete two world tours with 20 million album selling duo ‘Savage Garden’ as well as perform with musical heavyweights Ozzy Osbourne, Slash (Guns ‘n’ Roses) and Meatloaf.

Bringing a beautiful example of traditional Italian dance to the concert was
Selene Pennetta in her performance of Neo Pizzica (trad. arr Rosiak). Selene first began ballet lessons when she was three and went on to study a range of dance forms that saw her establish a notable career as a dancer across Europe. She is now an award-winning Pizzica dancer. The Pizzica is a popular Italian folk dance from the Salento Peninsula that to this day thrives within Italy and the International world music scene. Selene’s enchanting performance was visually stunning and testament to her love and dedication to the form.

Accordionist
Domenico Taraborelli brought a lot of smiles with his renditions of classic Italian songs. Like Cherin, Domenico first started playing the piano accordion when he was four (practicing for half an hr every day!) and now he performs at numerous corporate and private engagements both as a soloist and with Irish band Murphy’s Pigs and The Latin Mafia.

14yr old Violinist
Cherin Lee won and wowed the hearts of the entire audience with her astonishing performance of Vivaldi’s ‘Summer’. This young girl has an incredible talent beyond her years. She began violin lessons when she was four years old and now combines her high school studies at Brisbane’s Somerville House with her love for music. With a swag of awards under her belt, she is an absolute inspiration and testament to the benefits of a dedicated practice routine!

A big thank-you to
The Queensland Pops Orchestra and all the artists for an extraordinary performance on Sunday. We look forward to seeing you back on the Sunshine Coast again soon! “

SICILY, THE BLESSED LAND SELENE PENNETTA

Screening of Sicily, The Blessed land 3 part documentary.
Sicily, the biggest paradisiac island located at the centre of the Mediterranean caracterised by fascinating archaeological sites of absolute value and unique architectural works magnificently surrounded by a lush vegetation and by the stunning beauty of thousands of kilometres of coastline. All this beauty is concentrated in the biggest island of the Mediterranean area, the Sicily.

It is not a surprise if there is a belief that Sicily was the favoured land of ancient gods who walked the earth and were wooded like men.
During the 1950's, southern Italy was abandoned by at least one- quarter of the hard working people who at that time set their sights on the New World. They vacated that lovely land that time forgot in order to grow and blossom, returning only in their soul where their infinite love still burns.
The touching testimonials of those immigrants are remarkable and accurately portray the nostalgia and heroic courage of those uncommon people who describe this island as rich of fragrances, well-lighted by the sunshine and full of warmth.
“Sicily, The Blessed land” is  a  Georgicam Inc production written, directed and produced by Katalin Eszterhai. This docufilm was understood as a praise to all immigrants represented, in this case, by sicilians who reflect an extraordinary and respected concept of the italian being in the whole world.

GeorgicamItalianWeek

Sicily in all its glory was captured by the award winning cinematographer George Lajtai, member of the Canadian Cinematographer Society ,as they returned to the villages and small towns: Raccalmuto, Siculiana, Delia, Termini Imerese, Custonaci, San Fratello, Cattolica Ereclea etc. where time did not stand still, there is comfort, prosperity and even luxury as men and women  both participated in its transformation and created a new, modern Sicily but, anyway, it remains the island of the sun, blessed with history, culture and warm people full of hospitality.

This film will be well presented by
Selene Pennetta, artist and researcher of Italian Culture who proudly takes care of the diffusion of Italian traditions through numerous activities for cultural competence development useful at the same time for improving our daily lifestyle.

Pier21 Selene PennettaGeorgicamItalianWeek

About the film:
The first image of Canada for thousands of immigrants was PIER 21. in Halifax Before and after the Second World War, PIER 21 welcomed the continuous flow of immigrants who arrived from every part of the world in search of the Promised Land .  Immigrants who left behind their homeland, their loved ones, and in many cases, a lie marked by sacrifice and misery. They crossed the ocean aboard great ships they had only seen in photographs or films, reedy to begin a new life. They left in groups; together they felt courageous, less afraid… happy and excited about this new adventure they were undertaking, but with a deep, profound sadness in their hearts. If Pier 21 could talk, what incredible stories it would have to tell. Stories overflowing with emotions, courage, joy, but also, stories of pain, stories signalling the beginning and the end of dreams… dreams caressed by time.. dreams of rich, fertile lands offering new generations a secure future filled with infinite possibilities.
Most of the people you see in this film arrived to Canada  with so very little-in some instances only with the hope and aspirations that can be  born only under the most difficult of circumstances. Their courage and their determination to build something new, to build a new life for themselves and their families became in itself the foundation of so much of what we see here today. The heritage they left behind is everywhere.Their efforts, their dreams became the building stones of what we see around us. The immigrants were able to active their twofold goals. One, they found bread and work. No matter how inhuman and exploitive, it was better than the starvation they fled. And , two, they resisted the encroachment of" la via nova "into their own lives, in their terms, their audacious adventure has to be judged a success. But the price was very high……    Their courage and determination, became an inspiration to me as I studied the course of their life.  I hope my film does some little justice to their story, and that it lends the same hope to you as their story lent to me."
